As a repair person I get to visit these homes regularly. lf the furnace cannot breathe, it runs too hot and causes nuisance repairs, with the A/C unit it may freeze. As a suggestion, if you have a 1" filter, do not spend more than $5.00 for a single filter. lf you have the bigger box media filters between 3" and 6" in depth stay with the lower MERV rating (MERV 7 or 8). The cost savings can be as much as 50%, but the more important factor is that you are allowing your HVAC equipment to move the amount of air it was designed to move.How often should I replace my furnace filter?
Every home or business is different, so you need to monitor it until you know. To do this, date the filter and check it regularly. To check the filter, remove it when the equipment is off and hold it up to a light. lf there is a 20% to 30% light blockage, it is time to replace the filter.
