Heating and Cooling FAQs

Our Michigan heating and cooling customers always have lots of questions. Here are a couple of them, with the answers!

You can always call 313-381-2665 to schedule an air conditioning

estimate, a furnace repair or service, or a air conditioning repair or

service.

Question: Is there some yearly maintenance I can do on my air conditioner? Answer: Read our Air Conditioner Maintenance and Troubleshooting Guide Download and print our Air Conditioner Maintenance and Troubleshooting Guide Question: I have NO AIR CONDITIONING what can I do? Answer: Things to check if you have no air conditioning: o Check your circuit breaker or fuse. o Outside on the house is a gray electric box. Normally this is a fuse disconnect which means it needs to be opened, different brands open differently. Then once inside there is a handle, pull out, turn it around and you will see two fuses. Check the fuses and replace them if bad. o Check your digital thermostat, it may need new batteries. o Keep your outside condensing unit clean: turn off thermostat, take a garden hose spray the outside unit down for about 2 minutes, or until any debris is washed off. Let dry for 10 minutes, and then turn your thermostat back on. o Keep basement registers CLOSED in the summer. o If you have a condensate pump, we suggest putting a cup of bleach in the pump once a month, winter and summer.  Question: I have NO HEAT - forced air furnace - what can I do? Answer: Read our Furnace Maintenance Guide Download and print our Furnace Maintenance Guide Things to check if you have no heat: o Check the furnace filter, is it clean? o Is the thermostat in HEAT mode? If the thermostat is digital, most of them require new batteries every two years. o Check circuit breaker or fuse. o Is the switch at the furnace on? o If you had the blower door off, most furnaces require the blower door to be in place correctly. If the blower door is ajar the blower door switch will not allow the furnace to run. o If you have a 90+ high efficiency furnace and it is very cold out or very snowy you may want to check the 3” PVC pipes that go outside, see that they are unobstructed of snow, ice, paper cups, wasp nests, GI Joe action figures or anything else that may be in there.

Air Conditioner Testimonial

My air conditioning was not working and when I looked for an air conditioning repair company Downriver Michigan I found Alert Heating and Cooling in Lincoln Park. Although I live in Brownstown Doug came out to fix my air conditioning. I felt very silly when Doug told me that my problem would be solved with new batteries in my thermostat. He was kind and only charged me a nominal amount. I keep Alert Heating and Cooling's business card on my fridge in case of any heating or air conditioning emergencies. Thank you Doug!  -  Cynthia P. Brownstown, MI

Furnace  Repair Testimonial

Last winter I received a call from my elderly mother who lives in Southgate Michigan. It was a very cold day and she told me that she had no heat. Being elderly, she is susceptible to low temperatures and I live too far away to help. I searched the internet for a company that does furnace repair and found Alert Heating and Cooling in Lincoln Park MI. Doug made sure to go to my mother's house that same day and got her furnace working. I have peace of mind knowing that I can call Doug to help my elderly mother with her furnace and air conditioning needs. Thank you. -  Mike W. (mom in Southgate MI)
